Powell, Colin (Luther)

Oficial de ejército y funcionario público estadounidense. Hijo de inmigrantes jamaicanos, entró al ejército después de realizar estudios universitarios y prestó servicios en la guerra de Vietnam (1962–63, 1968–69). Luego de ocupar diversos puestos dentro y fuera del Pentágono, en 1983 fue nombrado ayudante militar principal del secretario de defensa. En 1987 formó parte del Consejo nacional de seguridad y, en el mismo año, el pdte. Ronald Reagan lo nombró ayudante del presidente en asuntos de seguridad nacional. En 1989 ascendió a general de cuatro estrellas y posteriormente ese año el pdte. George Bush lo nombró presidente de los jefes de estado mayor conjuntos; fue el primer oficial afroamericano que ocupó dicho puesto. Colaboró en la planificación de la invasión de Panamá (1989) y de las operaciones militares de la primera guerra del Golfo Pérsico. En 2001 pasó a ser secretario de Estado (el primer afroamericano que ocupó ese cargo) en el gabinete del pdte. George W. Bush.
